Thoughts as I figure out what to say now that I've finished my final paper on bonhoeffer.

Bethge's biography of Bonhoeffer is a scholarly biography. Which means there is a huge amount on Bohnoeffer's theology, how it developed and short descriptions of just about every paper he wrote. It means that his involvement in the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem is reduced to a couple of sentences! His friendship with Jean Lasserre gets a lot more attention than his friendship with Frank Fisher.
But the crossover of this German guy into a black Baptist church (where he taught Sunday School!) in the early 30s could not have been unremarkable. Why so little to be said? And how did this experience shape Bonhoeffer? Maybe there simply isn't much information - indeed this was a friendship, his personal life, and there would not have been the kind of documentation that clearly Bethge likes. To get a feeling for this I might have to read something less scholarly. Or maybe visit Union's Bohnoeffer archive, or the Abyssinian Baptist church.
